[18:45]<@jacky> Calum: Hello
[18:45]<@Calum> Hello!
[18:45]<@jacky> :)
[18:45]<@jacky> how's things?
[18:45]<@Calum> Pretty good here thanks, yourself?
[18:46]<@jacky> hanging in there
[18:46]<@jacky> heh
[18:46]<@jacky> thursday was a holiday
[18:46]<@jacky> got invited to big dinner... can't argue with that!
[18:46]<@jacky> :)
[18:46]<@Calum> Heh
[18:47]<@jacky> days (daylight) is short. I dread this time of year
[18:47]<@jacky> it tells me that coooooold weather is coming
[18:47]<@jacky> and we've had it very easy so far
[18:47]<@jacky> yesterday was almost 70F and close again today!
[18:49]<@jacky> saw you online once recently... but only noticed it after you'd left
[18:49]<@jacky> :(
[18:49]<+camerongray> Hey Calum & jacky
[18:49]<+camerongray> Finally caught you
[18:50]<@jacky> which "you" ?
[18:50]<@jacky> :)
[18:50]<+camerongray> err... both of you :P
[18:51]<@jacky> heh.. ok
[18:51]<@Calum> hey camerongray
[18:51]<+camerongray> how's things?
[18:51]<+camerongray> Not spoken in ages
[18:52]<@Calum> Pretty good thanks, settled into my new job and stuff
[18:52]<@jacky> new job?
[18:53]<+camerongray> Ahh nice, who are you working for now?
[18:54]<@Calum> place called Synectics Solutions
[18:54]<@Calum> started in August
[18:56]<+camerongray> Ahh nice
[18:56]<@jacky> solved anything?
[18:56]<@Calum> I've solved many things
[18:56]<@jacky> heh
[18:56]<+camerongray> IT support?
[18:57]<@Calum> "IT Operations" - so basically yeah :P
[18:57]<+camerongray> Better than the previous place?
[18:57]<@Calum> there's a lot of IT and it's quite segregated, different teams for different roles
[18:57]<@Calum> oh definitely
[18:57]<@Calum> I don't have to work under a moron for a start
[18:57]<+camerongray> :D
[18:58]<+camerongray> Very thankful where I am is decent, everyone is decent and actually knows what they are doing
[18:58]<@Calum> makes a big difference
[18:59]<@Calum> I need to start learning some SQL though
[18:59]<@jacky> so you all come here, just to remember what it feels like to be around morons?
[18:59]<@Calum> haha
[18:59]<@jacky> <g>
[18:59]<+camerongray> :D
[18:59]<+camerongray> SQL is fine :P
[18:59]<+camerongray> Just takes a lot of getting used to
[18:59]<@Calum> I haven't touched it at all since a bit of MySQL when I managed forums
[19:00]<+camerongray> ahh
[19:00]<@Calum> and a lot of the stuff I'll be expected to do when I'm at that level is SQL stuff
[19:00]<@Calum> so I'm going to start trying to get into it in the new year
[19:01]<@Calum> I signed up to that Codecademy.com, started learning bits on there
[19:02]<+camerongray> Yeah, codecademy's great
[19:03]<@Calum> used it to refresh myself on some HTML and CSS so far
[19:05]<+camerongray> I mentor at/help organise a club for kids who are interested in programming.etc (https://www.prewired.org/) - We use it a lot there
[19:05]<@Calum> oh, cool
[19:07]<+camerongray> Getting pretty popular, we've had 50 kids in one night before
[19:07]<+camerongray> That was absolutely crazy
[19:08]<+camerongray> I've also managed to volunteer myself as the go-to tech guy so I now need to battle the terribe laptops we have to keep them alive :P
[19:08]<@Calum> haha
[19:08]<@Calum> when you say terrible...how bad?
[19:09]<+camerongray> 6x Celeron 900, 2gb RAM, 2x Core Duo (donated by me), 1x Core 2 Duo, 1x Athlon M320 (Donated by me), 1x Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro
[19:09]<+camerongray> So pretty bad :P
[19:09]<@Calum> ouch
[19:09]<+camerongray> The core 2s are okay but the Celerons are borderline unsable at times
[19:09]<@Calum> I can imagine
[19:10]<+camerongray> The recent fun is that they have now just decided that they won't connect to the WiFi in the area where we tend to have the younger kids, which is made more annoying by the fact it's the younger kids that actually need to borrow our laptops
[19:10]<@Calum> ah
[19:10]<+camerongray> It's in a startup incubator who have clearly spent a fortune on Ruckus access points yet it is ridiculously flakey
[19:11]<@Calum> Ah right
[19:11]<+camerongray> Last week we ran an event for the parents to come and learn basic code stuff, had about 25 of them in one room, killed the WiFi
[19:11]<+camerongray> They were assigning IPs from a /24 which ran out, eneded up tethering them all to my phone
[19:11]<@Calum> we have issues with saturation, like 40-45 clients sometimes on one AP
[19:11]<@Calum> haha
[19:12]<+camerongray> It's good fun though: https://twitter.com/Prewired/
[19:13]<+camerongray> We're going through the process of becoming an official charity so that will hopefully allow us to get funding for new laptops
[19:13]<@Calum> ah that'd be pretty sweet
[19:14]<+camerongray> Oh yeah, more fun the other day
[19:14]<+camerongray> Entire University's network went out for 5 hours
[19:14]<+camerongray> Literally everything, both campuses totally offline
[19:14]<@Calum> wow
[19:14]<@Calum> what happened?
[19:15]<+camerongray> Even the APs lost connection to their controllers and stopped broadcasting, it was crazy
[19:15]<+camerongray> "We have not yet been able to diagnose the initial cause of this nor the reason why the outage was so widespread."
[19:15]<+camerongray> They genuinely don't know yet
[19:15]<@Calum> that's mental
[19:16]<+camerongray> One of the Tardis guys spoke to JANET who said they had no idea what was happening but it wasn't them and that they couldn't get hold of anyone at the university to ask
[19:16]<+camerongray> I was in the lab at the time, it was surreal
[19:16]<@Calum> Sounds like it
[19:17]<+camerongray> People were just wandering around confused because they couldn't save their work and then when their machines locked they couldn't unlock because LDAP was inaccessible
[19:17]<+camerongray> The uni's public facing website even went down
[19:17]<@Calum> that's some crazy widespread outage
[19:17]<+camerongray> Scary how such a huge network can just go down so quickly
[19:18]<@Calum> Indeed
[19:18]<+camerongray> It was probably some sort of redundancy system that failed and caused routers to go mental
[19:18]<@Calum> yeah maybe
[19:19]<+camerongray> It was at 20;30 so I doubt someone was sitting changing config, our IT department are very strict with working 9-5
[19:19]<@Calum> heh
[19:21]<@Calum> we cover 6am-10pm with out of hours support as well, we can't afford downtime
[19:21]<@Calum> the application support guys cover 24/7
[19:22]<@Calum> I think we'll be doing night shifts when we move to the new offices too
[19:23]<+camerongray> ouch!
[19:24]<@Calum> we do at least get paid for it though
[19:24]<@Calum> if you're on out of hours support, £75 to pick up the phone
[19:24]<@Calum> time and a half or double time for antisocial hours
[19:24]<@Calum> and weekends
